Why Are My Form Responses Not Saving or Submitting?

Responses not saving? Check the form's Sessions page, then the usual causes: unanswered required questions, invalid answers, Preview tests and file limits.

Both plans, the Free Plan and the Individual Plan, save unlimited responses.

What are the common symptoms?

  • Someone says they submitted, but the response is not on the form's Sessions page
  • The response count does not go up after a test
  • A respondent sees an error message and cannot submit
  • Responses are saved, but no email notification arrives

Step 1: Is the response on the Sessions page?

  1. On the Forms page, click the Sessions icon on the form's row.
  2. Check the count in the Sessions heading.
  3. Use Search responses to look for a name or email address.
  4. Check the following pages if the form has many sessions.

A submission that saved successfully showed the respondent "Thank you for your submission!" (or sent them to your custom redirect page). More about this page: Viewing and Managing Form Responses.

Troubleshooting

The respondent sees an error and cannot submit

FormRobin checks answers when the form is submitted and shows a message above the question that needs attention:

Message Cause
"… is required." A required question (marked *) was left empty
"… must be a valid email address." Email questions need a full address
"… must be a valid URL." URL questions need a full web address
"… must be a number." Number questions accept digits only

Required questions that are hidden by conditional logic are skipped, so they never block a submission. Answer the flagged question and submit again.

You tested the form in Preview

Submissions made in the form editor's Preview are never saved. Preview shows "Form preview submitted successfully! (This is just a test - no data was saved)". To test for real, open the live form with the View icon on the form's row.

"reCAPTCHA verification failed. Please try again."

Every form is protected by reCAPTCHA, which rejects submissions that look automated.

  • Reload the page and submit again
  • Ad or privacy blockers can stop reCAPTCHA from loading; try a private window or another browser

See reCAPTCHA Spam Protection.

A file upload stops the submission

  • "File size must be less than …MB" - the file is over the question's limit (10 MB by default, up to 50 MB in the question's Field settings)
  • "This file type is not allowed" - the question only accepts certain types, listed under the upload area

The form was not finished or is not published

  • A response is only submitted when the respondent clicks the submit button on the last page
  • Visitors cannot open an unpublished form, so it cannot receive responses; turn on the Published switch on the form's row

Browser or connection problems

  • FormRobin forms need JavaScript enabled
  • Try a private window, another browser, or turn off extensions
  • Keep a stable connection while submitting, especially with large files

Responses Are Saved but No Email Arrives

That is an email notification question, not a saving problem. Check that notifications are on for the form and look in your spam folder; see Setting Up Email Notifications.

How do I test my form?

  1. Open the live form with the View icon.
  2. Answer every question and submit.
  3. Check that the test appears on the Sessions page.
  4. If it does, the form works; the respondent's issue was one of the causes above.

Still stuck? Contact support at support@formrobin.com with the form link, what the respondent did, the browser and device, and a screenshot of any message.
